Internal Linking for Small Sites: A Practical Starting Point

August 8, 2026 · 2 min read

Internal linking sounds like an advanced SEO discipline reserved for large publishers with hundreds of interlinked articles. For a small site, though, the version of internal linking that actually matters is much simpler: making sure your most important pages aren't orphaned, and that related content actually points to related content.

Start by finding the orphans

An orphan page is one nothing else on your site links to — it's reachable only via a direct URL or a sitemap, never by clicking through the site itself. These are surprisingly common: a landing page built for a specific ad campaign, an old blog post that fell off the homepage rotation, a service page added after the main navigation was last updated. Search engines put real weight on how a page is linked to internally, not just whether it exists — an orphaned page is telling search engines "this isn't very important," even if it's actually one of your best-converting pages.

Link with intent, not obligation

The instinct once you start looking for internal linking opportunities is to link everything to everything. That's not the goal. A useful internal link exists because a reader genuinely benefits from following it right now — "here's the pricing page" from a feature description, "here's the setup guide" from a troubleshooting article. Links added purely to satisfy a link count read as noise, and they dilute the signal of the links that do matter.

Anchor text carries more weight than people expect

"Click here" and "read more" are wasted anchor text — they tell a reader and a search engine nothing about the destination. Anchor text that describes the destination page ("see our accessibility scan results" rather than "learn more") does double duty: it sets accurate expectations for the reader and gives search engines a clearer signal about what that linked page is about.

A reasonable starting goal for a small site: every page that matters should be reachable within two or three clicks from the homepage, and every page should link out to at least one other genuinely related page.
